Child and Adolescent Treatment Strategies

Background-Traditionally, research on psychotherapeutic interventions for children and families has been conducted in a limited range of settings, most frequently in university-affiliated clinics. While a great deal of research on the efficacy of specific psychotherapy models exists, the applicability of this research to the broader array of public and private sector mental health service settings is relatively unknown. In fact, there is very little research addressing actual practice in community settings and there is good reason to believe that the complexity of issues present in real world clinical settings is greater than in traditional research settings. We believe that there are opportunities for practice research, conducted in real-world settings and involving a broad spectrum of therapists and families that can complement the kinds of information that emerge from traditional clinical trials.

The Child & Adolescent Treatment Strategies project is aimed at learning more about treatment strategies from therapists who work with children and families on a daily basis in publicly supported mental health care settings. Using several different methods, our research is designed to understand the specific kinds of treatment principles, techniques, and strategies that therapists employ with children and families presenting for care, and to understand the elements of care that therapists think are most central to treatment outcomes. Later phases will examine the influence of specific mediators and moderators of treatment outcomes in the context of services delivered to children and families representative of those served in a broader array of publicly supported mental health care settings.
