This study tracks a cohort of approximately 1,700 children between ages 3 months and 5 years 11 months who enter the child welfare system to: 1) identify developmental delay in children with open child welfare cases who are removed from tbeir home of origin and compare rates of developmental delay in children with open cases placed in dependent care with rates of those children returned to their home following review, 2) further evaluate children with questionable and/or abnormal Denver tests using a standardized battery of speech /language and psychological tests and characterize specific types of delays seen, and 3) identify what types of intervention services children receive and determine which factors predict entry into public sector sponsored services for children with developmental delay.

DSEP has also developed a website at www.howkidsdevelop.com as a service to families with young children.
