Resources for Family Members

CASRC is primarily a research organization, but we understand the difficulties that a family may face when a family member has a mental health problem. Key statistics regarding mental health are provided below. Basic information on mental health conditions and how to reach advocacy groups that may be able to assist you in getting information and services is provided through the links on the right.

CASRC also has a major goal to improve care for children with mental health concerns by developing evidence-based materials on common conditions. We currently have a site on ADHD and are developing a site on Early Childhood Development.

Statistics

  • 20% or 1 in 5 children and adolescents may have a diagnosable mental disorder that interferes with their daily functioning.
  • Less than 1/3 of children with a mental illness receive mental health services.
  • Children in out-of-home care are at increased risk of emotional and behavioral problems, with estimates of 22 to 80% of children being affected.
  • Approximately 3 to 5% of children are affected by Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
  • School costs for children with ADHD were over 3 billion dollars in 1995.
  • Children with ADHD and Conduct Disorder who are not treated are more likely to experience drug abuse, antisocial behavior, teen pregnancy, and injuries.
